Trying out a new audio rig. Got a Focusrite Scarlett2i2 audio interface and hooked it to an old Audio Technica mic I have from art school… mostly because the input from my Rode Smartlav+ doesn’t seem to play nice with it (probably because I’d have to bounce it through two separate interface adapters. Hopefully I’ll get a better mic soon, but it’s backordered. Hopefully this one doesn’t sound so bad. Still getting used to putting my head in the same place to speak, though.

Email feedback from Andrew Bromley:

Further to you discussion of CAD for linux, there a a couple of programs you might want to look at.

For 3D CAD, there is solvespace, which is a draw and extrude based program, where models are build in a draw and exgrude fashion. Its basic approach is similar to freecad, but it is easier to use because it does not use the workbench approach, and limits itself to the draw and extrude approach to modelling. It can import models into the current file, which means that the user is responsible for project and parts management via separate files. It is available as a snap, and has a friendly forum, http://solvespace.com/forum.pl.http://solvespace.com/forum.pl

OpenSCAD is also useful, and do not let its progamatic nature put you off. While doing things like modelling threads and gears take real programing skills, libraries are available to do the hard work, and using them is quite straightforward. While OpenSCAD has limited 2d capabilities. it can import dxf files for more comples profiles to estrude or rotate. It allows use of an external text editor, and redraws the model when the file is saved. The documentaion, via .https://www.openscad.org/ is pretty good.

I use both for 3d modelling for 3d printing, and they are differerent enough that this does not cause problems.

Some other programs that I am aware of.

For 2d drawing there is librecad, which is autocad like in interface and use, and creates dxf files, which can be imported into Openscad.

For ‘artistic’ 3D modelling, there is wings3d, which look easier to learn that Blender, having a simpler interface.

All the 3D programs will export stl files.

There are things on thingiverse that created with all the mentioned programs, and wich include the source files, so it is worth typing the programs name into the serach box and looking at what the programs are capable of, and how the things were created.

honkeymagoo: Alternatives to webmin
https://alternativeto.net/software/webmin/

Email from Matt:
I actually use vlc to play youtube video in my kids room from my office
in the terminal. Just simply vlc –fullscreen [youtube address]. I
wouldn’t think that this should be an issue with youtube. But I guess it
makes sense. I mostly just send live streams of cartoons over to their
room.

And as far as Kodi, it’s just crazy that they get such a bad wrap for no
good reason. I really enjoy kodi/xbmc and never do anything illegal. I
honestly don’t know anyone who does.

And just a note on the DVDs, I picked up some cheap ones at Walmart for
my kids last year and they wouldn’t play no matter what codecs I got
installed. I eventually went to the fluendo player, just to see if they
still had the magic going on over there, and it worked! So, Fluendo
still have the magic touch with codecs on Linux. haha

I have a topic I would love to hear you guys talk about. The Pi-4. I
don’t have one but would very much like to hear how those are working out.

Another email from Matt:
Hey guys! I just wanted to say, I’m running kernel 5.6 on one of my
system I upgraded to a RX 5600 XT in that system. I don’t really know
all the deats on the upgrades in the kernel. But it runs just super and
haven’t had any problems on it. Anyway, great show, I really enjoyed
hearing about the news relating to COBOL. That was a great segment of
the show!

Dude, this is epic! at 2:00 on 146. I had no idea that they made these.
I found this one on Amazon. So epic!

Blaine Clark:
Around 11 days ago, I was trying LMDE 4 (Linux Mint Debian Edition 4) on a DVD through the Live Mode. The Beta had just been released. My wife decided to watch over my shoulder and loved what she saw. Without even trying it for herself, she declared she wanted it, NOW! I installed it on her 3-n-1 and she’s been happily toying with it throughout this quarantine. I got back to playing with it on my laptop and decided to install it the next day. We’re very well pleased with it and at this point we can both recommend it for others to at least try.Forgot to add, I’m 64, my wife’s 69 and going to be 70 next month. We is old coots! And when I call her the old lady I’m not joking! Well, not completely! Neither of us are nerds or geeks, just had our fill of Microsoft back in 07 and we’ve been a Linux household ever since.
