**”TMOTM (Tech Movie of the Month)”**

*list your picks in the comments*

We floated an idea to do a tech movie of the month last show. Everyone picks a group of tech related movies and we’ll pick one, all watch it, and then give our review each month. Any listeners are free to add to the list as well. Only caveat is that it’s tech/linux/computer related.

I figured to make this more fair, we should employ a randomizer that takes all the picks from the list and outputs one to review. And what better way than the Linux way? It should pick a random movie from the list, add it to another, and delete it from the original list. Here’s my script:

“`
#! /bin/bash

## Variables
SELECT_FILE=”~/Desktop/MOVIELIST”
CHOSEN_FILE=”~/Desktop/MONTHYPICK”
NUMBER_CHOSEN=1

## START
CHOICES=`cat “$SELECT_FILE”
#echo “$MOVIELIST” MONTHLYPICK=`echo “$CHOICES” | sort -R | sed ${NUMBER_CHOSEN}q`
echo “$MONTHLYPICK” > “$CHOSEN_FILE”
echo “$MONTHLYPICK” | grep -v “^$MONTHLYPICK$” > “$SELECT_FILE”

“`

Sharing this here since I’m traveling and may not be able to make the next show.

Maybe this isn’t new to anyone else but me since I haven’t dual booted in a long time, but I’ve learned a few things after a recent encounter with Windows:

1. It *is* actually possible to install Windows on an external hard drive so as not to sully your existing Linux install. Windows doesn’t like doing this and it’s a bit of a pain to do… but it does work.

2. If you need to switch to the other OS from Windows, don’t shut down… just hibernate (assuming you have the swap space available to do so). Then you can temporarily reboot to the other OS to do whatever needs to be done… and when you come back, all of your active applications are right where you left them. Really handy.

3. It’s actually not all that difficult to get Arch running in WSL.

4. Although WSL can mount ext4 volumes, it’s a bit tricky to get it to work if you’re using luks to encrypt the whole drive… still working on that.

Blaine Clark:
Notes and questions on a new Asus installation.
I just purchased an Asus laptop, an F512J. I intended to install LMDE4 immediately and made a USB image. Info told me to hold the F2 key as the unit was powered up to access the BIOS. This worked as expected. I disabled Secure Boot, set boot order and attempted to boot up. Hang. I pressed the power button and the boot process jumped just a bit. Everything hung again. I pressed the power button again and nothing. I held it and forced a shutdown. Tried booting again. Same. For a test I made a LM Cinnamon 20 USB and attempted another boot. The boot completed but just into the install it stopped too, but with a message about RST needing to be disabled. I got into the BIOS but there was no option to disable the RST. I did some checking into RST then got into the SATA settings and changed that to AHCI. LMDE4 still wouldn’t boot, but LM 20 was OK again and I completed the installation without a hitch. I’m in the process of getting it tuned to my specs now and not having any further issues.
I had checked the .iso files and I had tried the USBs on my ancient Toshiba to make sure they were good images and they both booted with no troubles on the Toshiba.
Any ideas on getting LMDE to boot and install? LM C 20 is fine, but I’d much rather have LMDE for my full time runner. I’ve been using it for the last year and I’ve grown attached to it.

This was, in part, because I set up a new monitor. Using Barrier (https://github.com/debauchee/barrier) to have a single keyboard and mouse is great, but changing inputs was a right pain. Found a way with ddcutil to also control that from my keyboard. A couple key things to note:

  • It’s a really good idea to get the i2c-dev module automatically loaded, otherwise ddcutil doesn’t work much.
  • Thing is, that module loads with root permissions, but fortunately ddcutil ships with a way around that: https://www.ddcutil.com/i2c_permissions/
  • With that done, changing inputs (among other things) can be done right from the command line. I’ve set up aliases in my .bashrc and also set some key bindings in Enlightenment

Fweeb:
I got a 7″ touchscreen for a Raspberry Pi. Combine that with a bit of 3D printing and point the browser to my NextCloud instance and I have a little kitchen kiosk with a cookbook and a calendar. Posted a photo on the MeWe group.
Links to stuff to print for it:

Fweeb:
Also,  I got a whole new laptop. An Acer ConceptD 7. Pretty sweet machine. Installed Arch on it (of course). Actually tried out using the new guided install script. Took a couple tries, thanks to issues with RST and setting up partitions with encryption… but eventually got it to work. Still refining a bit, but everything works. And I took this opportunity to use Pipewire. That works too.
